Welcome Bryan Hicks and Gretchen Bitterlin!
Bryan Hicks grew up in North County San Diego. In 2011, he began volunteering with refugees and quickly found himself tutoring people of all ages from many different language backgrounds. His involvement supporting the refugee communities in San Diego led to his interest in ESL instruction. Today he teaches ESL for the San Diego Community College Continuing Education ESL Program. He also helps mobilize churches and friends to support the immigrant communities in San Diego.
Bryan shares his knowledge of learning language along with a wonderful sense of humor to the tutor training sessions. He shares practical classroom information as well as the theory needed to understand how students learn.
Gretchen has taught Citizenship, ESL, and family literacy through the San Diego Community College District and served as coordinator of the non-credit Counting Education Education ESL program. She was an item writer for CASAS tests and chaired the task force that developed the TESOL Adult Education Program Standards. She is recipient of the President’s Distinguished Leadership Award. Gretchen holds an MA in TESOL from the University of Arizona.
Gretchen brings a plethora of knowledge and practical application to training sessions. Her calming demeanor and passion for ESL is evident as she works with potential tutors.
