Welcome to Laubach from the Board of Directors! We’re honored you’re considering spending your valuable and limited time endeavoring to help adults learn to speak English as their Second Language (ESL).
Laubach Literacy Council of San Diego County celebrated its 58th year of service in 2019 as a 100% all-volunteer organization. We tutor 28 locations throughout San Diego County and currently have around 175 tutors assisting approximately 800 students.
Why is speaking English important? More people speak English than any other language except
Mandarin—more than those who speak Arabic and French combined. English is the native language of more
than 350 million people.
English is the international language of diplomacy,
business, science, technology, banking, computing, medicine, aviation,
engineering, tourism, and Hollywood films. Spoken English is used in the best careers and the best
universities, and is essential at most job interviews. You need to speak English properly to
take full advantage of life and opportunities in the United States.
The time you spend helping your student effectively communicate will enable them to have a better quality of life. For some it is a matter of survival: i.e. accessing medical care, interviewing for a job or understanding currency. For others it is a way of assimilating more deeply into the American culture.
Men and women like you, seeking to tutor, come from a rich variety of cultural and educational backgrounds. So whether you want to tutor an hour and a half a week or three times a week, we want to assure you that both Laubach and your student (s) appreciate you!
